Formal withdrawal of the United States from the Open Skies Treaty

The agreement enables the 34 partner nations to perform aerial reconnaissance over the territory of each other.



The United States issued a notice of withdrawal from the Open Skies Treaty on 22 May 2020. Senate Democrats challenged the legitimacy, wisdom, and appropriateness of the proposed withdrawal so close to the presidential election of the United States in 2020.


U.S. government outlets, including U.S. Department of States websites, report today on 22 November 2020; U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and official Twitter of the National Security Council announce that the six-month span is over and that the US is no longer party to the Treaty.
