Cainiao teams up with Volga-Dnepr Group for a new cargo route from Hong Kong to Madrid via Liege

Together with its strategic partner, CargoLogicAir, the Volga-Dnepr Company, one of the world's leading groups of air cargo carriers, continues to expand its partnership with Cainiao Network (Cainiao), following the growing market for e-commerce shipments.

AirBridgeCargo Airlines (ABC), part of VDG, conducted the first flight from Hong Kong (China) to Madrid (Spain) for Cainiao on 14 July, while also providing space on the return journey from Spain.

Over 100 tons of parcels were borne by ABC's Boeing 747 freighter, all of which included high-tech products and consumer goods exported from vendors on the AliExpress e-commerce platform.

Starting with weekly flights, the number of flights will eventually increase to three in August. In addition, the flight will operate via Liege (Belgium), another common e-commerce destination within the VDG network. After arrival in Liege and Madrid, the packages will be rapidly distributed across Europe via Cainiao's trucking network and terminal distribution in Europe, ensuring that the delivery timeframes for the entire process from https://air-miles-guide.com/countries/china/ China to Europe are preserved within 10 days.

Madrid will complement Spain's current ABC Northern destination, Zaragoza, while providing distribution options from the Hong Kong catchment area to southern and central Spain.

We have been working closely with Cainiao Network since 2018 to develop fast, scalable, and cost-efficient solutions. This included expanding our network, realigning business and operational challenges, selecting the most suitable form of freighter, and incorporating digital solutions. Starting with An-124-100, we then started operating other freighters within the Cainiao Community to ensure greater option and comfort through our definition of CargoSupermarket. Tatyana Arslanova, Executive Operating Officer, Volga-Dnepr Group, stressed that we would further assist Cainiao with the best-in-class fleet of 39 freighters to accommodate e-commerce volumes, which have tripled within the Group in the first five months of 2020 and reached the level of 20,000 tonnes.

William Xiong, Chief Strategist and General Manager of Export Logistics of Cainiao, said, "Cainiao has been working with partners globally to increase logistics efficiency and optimize user experience." "In order to safeguard cross-border logistics and help Chinese merchants sell globally, Cainiao plans to launch 1260 chartered flights this year."

The new route will help cross-border deliveries that have been booming in recent years and worsened during the lockdown era of Covid-19 as customers refocused from offline shopping to online shopping.
